Is tile the right path?

green and white tile flooring

Tile may fit dry rooms, wet areas, entries, kitchens, bathrooms, or commercial spaces when the selected product and assembly suit the use. This page addresses floor tile; shower and other wet-area assemblies may require a broader bathroom scope.

Build from the substrate up

A sound tile scope considers removal, substrate type and condition, flatness, cracks and movement,
moisture, underlayment or membrane needs, layout, cuts, transitions, grout, base details, and access.
Large-format or specialty products may add requirements that cannot be assumed from a photo.

What to share

Provide the room or area, property type and use, approximate dimensions, current flooring, substrate if
known, moisture or crack history, selected tile when available, layout direction, transition points, and
photos. Note whether adjacent rooms are part of the same project.

Can tile go over the existing floor?

Sometimes, but height, bond, flatness, movement, moisture, transitions, and manufacturer requirements
must support that approach. Removal may be necessary to assess or prepare the substrate.
Send the area, current floor, tile direction, and known substrate or moisture concerns.
