Accessory Dwelling Units

Plan a detached accessory dwelling unit around the lot, intended use, access, utilities, drainage, setbacks, and rules that apply to the property.

An accessory dwelling unit, or ADU, is a detached secondary dwelling on a property. If you want new space connected to the existing structure, review Home Additions. The right path affects site planning, utilities, access, and applicable restrictions.

Check feasibility before design assumptions

Start with the survey and proposed location. Setbacks, lot coverage, deed restrictions, HOA requirements, flood or drainage conditions, utility capacity, parking, fire access, and the governing jurisdiction can shape whether and how an ADU moves forward. Houston-area rules vary, and no page can promise approval for every lot.

What to share

Provide the address, property type, intended use, approximate size, survey if available, desired placement, utility information, access conditions, and any known deed or HOA requirements. Early sketches are useful when they show the relationship to the main structure and property boundaries.

Are ADUs allowed on every Houston property?

No. Feasibility depends on the lot, jurisdiction, deed restrictions, HOA rules, utilities, access, drainage, and the proposed design. A property-specific review comes before scope or approval assumptions.
